Sun Moon Lake's high temperatures, humidity, abundant rainfall, and altitude make its cultivation environment similar to that of the Assam tea region in India. The Assam black tea grown here has received high praise for its quality. The Sun Moon Lake area is the only place in Taiwan where Assam black tea is cultivated.
In the Sun Moon Lake tea region, there is another unique variety created by crossbreeding a native large-leaf Myanmar mother tree with a wild Taiwanese Camellia tree. This variety, known as Taiwan Tea No. 18 or Red Jade or Black Jade, produces a bright red tea when brewed. Due to its Taiwanese Camellia genes, it has a natural hint of cinnamon and leaves a cool, mint-like aroma on the palate. This native Red Jade black tea is considered a unique Taiwanese specialty and has earned acclaim from experts worldwide, being recognized as one of the world's top black teas.
